Explicit Lyrics

To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Music with explicit lyrics (bad words) should be censored when played on the radio.

Please be thoughtful and thorough in your response (all responses should be at least 3 lines long), and remember to be professional with your grammar, spelling, and word choice.

  1. I partially agree with that statement because some words should be censored if it offends different people but if it doesn't offend anyone then it shouldn't matter.

  2. I do not agree with this because i think it is the songwriters freedom to put any words he/she wants in their music. I do think that their should be certain radio stations that are appropriate and others that have explicit language so young children will not be exposed to bad words. This way not all music will be censored, jusr music on certain stations.

  3. I fully agree with that statement because everyone has freedom of speech which includes the things that people should be able to hear such as bad words. If someone wanted to listen to the same song on the radio but with it including bad words, they can simply just go home and buy it on itunes.

  4. i disagree with the quote. like what emilyw said, censorship is (in a way) against the first amendment: the right to free speech. sure some people get offended by what they hear but, it's just words, they won't hurt you, its all in the offended person's head.

  5. I disagree with this statement because you should be able to choose what you want to listen to. It is the musicians choice to put those in the song so it should be played how they made it. Also if you like listening to those words than you should be able to and if not then don't.

  6. I think that the song writer has the rights to be able to put any words that they would want in their song, but i also think that on the radio it makes it easier for people to be able to sensor what their kids here or just if people don't want cursing. So people who do can just listen to their music from an ipod and not have to worry about the radio at all.

  7. I am independent with this statement. I think that the music that is explicit should have its own station and not be played on any normal station. That should solve the problem.

  8. I think that censorship should be up to the radio station. Personally, I don't mind, but you do have to think about others that listen such as the older people, and the younger children, I think that the older people would not agree with the language being used, and it's not good for the younger children to be hearing.

  9. I agree with the statement because, like Emily said, everyone has the right to freedom of speech. The writer of a song has the full right to put in explicit lyrics if it gets the point across that they want. If the music played on the radio offends someone then they should not be listening to it in the first place. If one person doesn't agree with a message or word that is in a song then their opinion shouldn't over ride another persons opinion.

  10. I agree with the statement. I believe that bad words should be censored. i also believe that their is no reason to put bad language into songs in general. There is a reason why they are bad words and against what Alex said, even though they are words and cant physically hurtful, they can emotionally be hurtful. The words that they use to describe women are disgusting and should not be encouraged and played on the radio.

  11. I agree with this statement. If explicit lyrics are played on the radio all it is doing is teaching the world bad words. One never knows when a kid is sitting next to them and out of no where a song with many bad words is played. Now that child has those words soaked into his growing, learning brain and even if he does not use them now he knows them and there is a good chance he will use them later. There is no need for bad words in songs whether someone thinks it makes it better or more powerful, it doesn't. It just makes it a song with lots of bad language.

  12. I partially agree because the writer wanted his/ her song to be written that way for a reason. I agree because it may offend people. It may offend them because of their race religion, and other reason like that.

  13. I disagree with this statement because although bad words on the radio might offend some people, those people can choose to listen to their own music, rather than the music playing on the radio.Editing the lyrics can detract from the song creator's original message. Although this is not always the case, it is still annoying to be listening to a song on the radio and have random pauses or noises to cover up words.

  14. I think that songs should be censored because kids might be listening. And if you really don't want it to be censored then you could just buy the song.

  15. I think that the writer of the song can choose what words are put in the song but they do need to be careful. You can write a good song without putting such explicit stuff in it. If the song has bad language in it the radio station should take charge of that and beep it out.

  16. I disagree with this statement. Every person will hear a "bad" word sooner or later, its not that big of a deal. Its a word. There are plenty of other words with the same meaning, I don't see why people make such a big deal out of this.

  17. I agree with the statement in the fact that the radio station doesn't have an idea of who might be listening to that station. The radio station has a choice of putting the lyrics on or not knowing who could be listening. I disagree with the statement in that it was the songwriters choice to put those words into a song.

  18. I think that it depends on who your listeners are and what they find offensive. Like people don't really care and the people that do. The song writer has the right to put the words in their song, but it should appeal to their listeners.

  19. Music with explicit lyrics should be censored on public radio, but should keep the option open to have an unedited version available on line. Public radio is played for those who don't care about hearing the words as well as people that have religious, personal, or moral values that make them uncomfortable hearing the words. Their free will should be respected.

  20. A agree with Molly, if they are going to put disrespectful and hurtful lyrics in a song they should not just ban the lyrics but ban the song altogether.

  21. I understand both sides of the argument, but I think I am more leaning towards the shouldn't be censored. Yes, words can be hurtful because of the words people are throwing out these days and maybe people shouldn't publicize them. Yet, with the technology we have these days not many people listen to the radio anyway. You can simply go on iTunes and buy the song censored or not, and you burn it to a CD or put it on your iPod and play that in your car. It is also a disruption of rights because there is freedom of speech so they should play songs the way they were intended to sound, and most songs have a meaning or reason behind it. Think about if in a child story you took out a part you saw offensive to anyone, like in Hansel and Gretel you took out the witch because it's offensive to...witches. (Random example but still) that ruins the story and it's lost its cause and meaning.

  22. I disagree with this statement in a way. The songs should be censored of all prejudice lyrics like the N word or things like that. But' if it is just a swear word then it is alright with me; but many people are offended by them and I respect that.

  23. No i disagree with this, if the song says a "Bad word" they song lyricist put it in there for a reason, covering that up would be devaluing a song from it's intended impact, now there are some songs that don't know how to use the cuss word in context then that song should just not be played, swear words have a meaning like all other words and if used in a proper context than it should not be bleeped out.

  24. I like what Gabe said about if people really want to hear the full song then they could buy it, but its true that there are too many kids that could listen to the radio and be filling their minds with filthy ideas. Some stuff on radio is not fit for kids, especially if they don't really know what they are listening to.

  25. I totally disagree with this question it's unconstitutional; it prohibits the artist right to speech. it states here in the first amendment "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances...."

  26. I agree with sam.nyland because the lyrics were made like that for reason. And if they have to censor some words that would be better than everything.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with Gabe because if you do to hear the song with the explicit lyrics you could go out and just buy the song and listen to it on your own time.

  28. I completely agree with Devon T. if explicit lyrics are so bad, don't listen to the radio.

  29. I agree with Meg because each song is made with a story behind it and some put their heart and soul into the composition of that piece and to have people editing out part of their argument or their story isn't right. I a person were giving a speech, like Obama for example, and he was talking about terrorism and some parent didn't want their child exposed to that the purpose of the speech is lost. So I personally am leaning towards not censoring because the song then losses its value and that is disrespectful to the author.

  30. I agree with JakeL
because its okay with bad words but when its like to the extreme when the whole song is just the N$%$er word over and over ya maybe they can block that out but I think that hearing the bad word is problely still better then hearing the beeping noise though

Commenting plus I don't like Gabe comment I don't like it here don't like it there I don't like it anywhere, can gabe even buy a song but it ruins the song when its beeped out-by jake romo

  31. I agree with both Kaityi and MegR. I like Kaity's idea about having separate radio stations that don't have explicit language. But the songwriters do have a choice about what they put in their songs. For Meg, I like your ideas about the witches. You have a good point in how it is a disruption of rights, but I disagree with the fact that not many people listen to the radio. The people I know, or ride in the car with, mostly all listen to the radio still, I don't know how they feel about explicit language but they still listen to it. I am kind of split on this decision, both Kaity and Meg have given good ideas about this issue. Everyone else has some good thoughts about this issue.
