Chance, Choice, and Tragedy

Please find a fairly recent article (within the past year) that describes a tragedy that a person or group of people have faced.

On this blog, please do the following:

First, please offer a brief summary of your article (3-5 sentences).

Second, comment on whether or not you think this person had control over this tragedy--did this happen by choice or by chance? Explain your thinking.

Third, please read over the comments on this post and respond to the following question:Which is the greater tragedy--one that happens because of a bad choice, or the one that happens by random chance? Explain your thinking.

  1. The death on Michael Jackson was a tragedy to most. It affected the Jackson family greatly and Michaels wife and kids. The Los Angeles County coroner has ruled that Michael Jackson's death was a homicide involving a combination of drugs.

Michael Jackson had no control over his death, although Murray, Michaels personal physician did. By Murrays decision in alternative drugs for Jackson, caused his body to react differently and stop his breathing which caused his death. Murray affected the lives of America and th Jacksons family with his homoicide.

  2. I completely agree with Emily, the most shocking death this year is the death of Michael Jackson. Michael died because of the drugs given to him by his doctor. He suffered a major heart attack because of the drugs. When his doctor assigned the drugs to him he was taking drugs on the side; which made him have a bad reaction and die.

In some ways I think that he had control of his own death because he was taking drugs on the side. His doctor had no way to know this. But, the doctor needed to ask.

Personally, I think it much worse when someone has no control over their death. They were innocent; but they still die. When someone makes a bad choice I don't know how you can feel bad for them when it was their fault that they died.

  3. I think that Michael Jackson’s death was very tragic, and it hit the hearts of people all over America, but I decided to do some more research on how Billy Mays died. Billy died when he was 50 years old, and they found him at home at his house in Florida, and there were no signs of a break in, nor signs of fighting between him and his wife. After the coroner’s report came back, it turns out, Billy had cocaine in his system, and Billy’s family has a history of heart problems. Cocaine and heart conditions don’t mix very well at all. Cocaine raises blood pressure, and with the conditions of his heart caused a heart attack, which then further lead to his death.

I think that he did have control of this “tragedy”. If he wouldn’t have been taking the drug in the first place, we would probably be seeing him on another Oxy Clean commercial about every 10 minutes.

And last, I think that it’s much more tragic if something just happens randomly because in that type of situation, nobody could see anything bad happening, but in a situation like Billy’s, I’m sure he saw it coming. I don’t necessarily think that he was trying to kill himself, but I’m sure he knew the risk he was taking before he decided to take the drug. He knew that he had a heart condition, and he took it anyway.

  4. Although the comments that i have read so far are very sad. I have something to sure about a man that is more sad and an terrible experience that i Pray that no one will have to go through. This story is about a young man coming home from College and is in need of his mom's "county cooking" and is bored with his normal "school food". When the day finally came, he was expecting the smell or even left overs of his long missed food to be on the counters of the once deep fried kitchen... What he didn't know is that he mom and Aunt, along with his Health,Vegi freak cousin went to Taiwan over there summer, the mom not know, converted over to the dark side of TOFU. When this young man came home..... There was only TOFU sitting on the counters for the poor soul to eat, and know "Real Food". This youg man had to suffer through many treturous days of eating this man made "stuff".
I feel that this youg, poor soul had no choice of his mothers actions to decide to convert from good to the evil. If he had known of this conflict i think that the son would talk to the mother befor the issue errupted.
The greater tragedy is a tragedy that happens by chance. The reason is because at random and not know when things will occur is when it is sad the most. To as when is it made by choice you are prepared by your choice or actions as the people around you will be to.

  5. About a week ago, there was a bombing in Peshawar, Pakistan that killed almost a hundred people. The Taliban were responsible for this attack. This happened by choice of the Taliban, but by no fault of the Pakistani people.

I think a greater tragedy is one that happens by random choice, because then the victims are not prepared for the outcome and haven't deserved the result of the tragedy.

  6. Two conifer High School students were recently killed in a chain reaction car accident. The driver (a high school student an Conifer) lost control and hit another car causing his car to roll. The driver and passenger both died, while the drivers brother, sitting in the back seat survived.

The student had lost control of the car, so i wouldn't say that the situation was "controllable". It was mostly based upon being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I believe it is a greater tragedy if a person is affected my chance. I think this because unlike tragedy's that happen my a bad mistake that you had control over, it happens at random. It is bad when any kind of tragedy happens, but it's harder to say "they didn't even have a chance".

  7. All the comments I've read are very interesting and I agree most of them are tragic events. However, when I first read the blog, the shooting at Fort Hood in Texas not too long ago came to my mind first. In early November, Major Hasan opened fire at many soliders killing at least seven and wounding many. Hasan was shot and killed by a Sergeant was strolling by during traffic control. No one understands why he did such a horrific thing. Major Hasan had control over the shooting and it wasn't just a bad choice on his part.

I believe that a tragedy that happens by bad choice is just as bad as one that happens by random chance. Even if it happened by a bad choice, the bad choice could lead to a tragedy that happens by a random chance.

  8. The day after Thanksgiving Paul M. Merhige shot his twin sisters which one of them was pregnant, his cousin which was six years old, and a seventy nine year old aunt in Jupiter, Florida. An “America’s Most Wanted” viewer recognized Paul’s description and car and called the police.

I think that he did do it by choice because maybe he had some problems with his family and shot them, but also he could have been on something that caused him to do this, but shooting your family is way harder to do than some random person so I think he had some problems with them.

I definitely think that death by bad choice is worse because everyone has their time, but if someone kills you they basically steal your life.

  9. The comments above have insightful answers to why and how tragedy occurs. I chose to read an article about the shooting at Fort Hood. A military psychiatrist shot and killed 12 people, and wounded 31 others.

I think the shooter, Hasan, most definitely had control over the situation because he chose to target random people.

I'd have to say that the greater tragedy is the tragedy that happens by choice. When tragedy happens by choice, people get angry at the person who caused it. It causes a wide-spread of emotions and problems when it happens by choice. When it happens by chance, many, but not all, people turn to religion to help them grieve. Some deal with the tragedy by believing that God had made it happen for a reason and they feel better knowing that it is in his hands.

  10. The death of the Cincinnati Bengal's wide receiver Chris Henry stood out to me. He was driving in the back of a truck with his wife. He supposedly jumped off the back of the moving truck and landed on the side of the road. He had serious brain damage and was moved to the hospital where he later died there. He had complete control of his actions he was not a person of suicidal thinking he was just having a bad day and made the wrong mistake. His fiance said he had a lot going for him and didn't know why he would do such a thing. The greater tragedy is one that happens by chance because you have no control over it and its said that you cant do anything about it. The one by choice is still said but you realize it was there choice and thats what they have to live by now

  11. On December 20, 2009 Britney Murphy died. She was only 32 years old. She stared in movies such as 8 Mile, Girl Interupted, Clueless, and Sin City. When they investigated her death it appeard to be natural.
I dont really think that she had control over her death due to the fact that it was natuarl. It is sad to me how young she was.
I would say that I agree with Jake because I think that it is far worse when a person doesnt have control over their death.

  12. Everyone so far has really found some interesting articles and had some realistic reflections. I read an article online that told the story of the death of Meredith Emerson. She was followed my a man with the last name of Hilton when she went hiking. When se returned he kidnapped her and beat her. He held her for around 3 days trying to get her various pin codes, however she wouldn't tell her. Finally, the man tied her up and murdered her (beat her to death).
For Miss Emerson, the situation was hard to avoid. She was reported to be a petit young lady and was attacked by a fairly large man. She may have tried but she had little control of the situation. The man however had control over everything. He could have let her go, but he chose not to. He did all the kidnapping and all the beating he chose to perform this terrible act.
I think for the person who the tragedy happens to it is more dramatic/tragic if their decision led to the desastor, because before they die (or after the even) they know that they were the one who caused it so it eats away at their conscience too. However, to the outside audience I think it is more tragic to hear about someone whose tragic experience was not their fault because then you feel bad for them because it was not their fault, like JakeL was saying. We feel a lot of pain for the girl who was murdered because it was not her fault in any way. However, the man (who was imprisoned for life) would have the guilt of his decision eat away at him for the rest of his life.

  13. In a recent article there was a story about a girl named Elizabeth Smart. When Elizabeth was a little girl she was kid napped and was never found and the police eventually just assumed that she was dead. Around 15 years later she was found, living with the same guy that kidnapped her, in his back yard with a young kid (most likely with the same man).
This tragedy happened by chance. Although many kidnappings occur, Elizabeth was lucky to come out of the situation alive even if it was many years later.
Like many people before me, I think that a tragedy by chance is wrose than tragedy created by a bad choice. It is worse because when something happens by chance, you don't have any control over the situation. Such as in Elizabeth's case, she lost her child hood and most of her life and it was purely out of her control; but also her parents suffered a great tragedy because they lost their kid and couldn't do a thing about it. But when a tragedy is created by a bad choice, it would be something that you could have changed by making a better choice. For example, if you go back before Elizabeth was kidnapped, certain aspects of her parents' responsibility could have determined her safety. Such as if her parents had left her unattended in a public area, it would still be sad if the kidnapping occured but it would have been a bad choice made by the parents. That choice would have been controlled whether it was good or bad.

  14. There were several trajedy's that occured in 2009, but the one I found to be the sadest was that of Patrick Swayze's death. Patrick died at the age of 57 because of pancreatic cancer with which he fought for twenty months. Swayze's death had a huge impact on his family obviously, but he also effected the entire movie making industry, and his fans.

Patrick Swayze's death was completeley by chance, he had no choice over his death because no one can control if they die or live from cancer.

I think a death by chance is more trajic than that of a death by bad choices. I believe this because some one who dies from random chance is so sad bcause they could be a completely innocent, and good person and just die. If someone dies because of a bad choice, it is still sad, but they are the ones who made the choice and got themselves or someone else killed, and they could be a horrible person which takes even more away from the sadness.

  15. I haved read some really good ones as well, but the one that really stuck with me was the death of michael jackson.Michael Jackson had real no choice over all the drugs that he was being given. This death affected so many people in the world his fans, family and friends. The doctor sadly took his own life by using the same drug's that h was perscribing to Michael Jackson so therfore he passed away to. The sad thing is both of these men died diffrently. Michael real had no choice over his death, but the doctor did. I think it's really sad when the a person has real no choice over how he passes.

  16. After reading all of these comments, i agree with everyone and they honestly just made me sad. I also read an article about the tragic death of Michael Jackson. He was given drugs by his doctor that actually ended up putting him in cardiac arrest and eventually killing him. From what i read, Michael didnt choose to die, but you never know what really happened. Its tragic because he didnt choose to die and had family and the most important show of his life coming um the next week. I think the sadder thing is when someone dies from choice because it gives guilt to more people and people become more affected and start asking more questions. atleast when someone dies of chance, there is no one to blame.

  17. I agree with everyone especially with the death of Michael Jackson bceause so many people looked up to him as a hero and role model. Plus, he was just making his life better and was about to do a concert, so a lot of people had hope for him. It must have been a really hard loss to his family because all the media and they had to privacy to deal with his death.

  18. All of the comments are very interesing and all of them are tragities. The artical I read about tragities was about Patrick Swayze's death. This was due to him having pancreatic cancer. When he died the artical said that he died peacefully and by his family. He also passed away peacefully. He had cancer for 20 months and the doctor said that it was hard to say that he would live two years. I think that he knew he was going to die, but he didnt't choose to have cancer and he didn't choose to suffer either.I think the bigger tragity is when you bring that tragity by your bad choices because then it shows that you, in a way, wanted that to happen to you and if that tragity just happens by chance it means that you didn't want to bring that into your life.

  19. Throughout the past year there have been many different tragedies that many different people have overcome. The tragedy that came as a surprise to me was the Fort Hood shooting. In the article I read Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan had been communicating with a radical Islamic, he first started talking to this person on December 17, 2008. In many of the e-mails the Islamic terrorist had asked the Maj. if killing US soldiers and officers was illegal under Islamic law. The Maj. Hasan finally took to Islamic law and went on a shooting rampage on November 5, 2009. In my mind this person had a choice to make and he made the wrong one affecting many different families. I think this because he was a soldier and he ended up shooting his brothers in arms and made the choice to do this, he could have taken a different road and it would not have ended like it did. I think that a greater tragedy is one that has happened by choice because it could have been prevented but it was not.

  20. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/01/08/2787854.htm?section=world
A suicide bomber wearing an explosives-filled vest Thursday killed eight people and wounded 24 others while targeting a private security convoy in an eastern Afghan town, an official said.
ABC News recently released an article regarding a suicide bombing that took place yesterday in Afghanistan. The bomber was wearing a vest packed with explosives and when he was attacked it exploded killing eight people and injuring 24. It is assumed that the bomber was a part of the Taliban. The United States are still struggling to keep this powerful group under control and are planning to send more troops to Afghanistan in response to the increase of attacks.
The people involved in this tragedy had no control over what happened. They were simply living their lives and doing their jobs. Unfortunately they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. This tragedy wasn’t an accident; instead it is exactly what the bomber was attempting to do, kill a number of innocent people. So the tragedy was the result of a choice however the majority of the people involved were simply victims of one person’s choice.
Tragedy that happens by choice is far greater. Those that are simply by chance cannot be controlled and are simply a part of life. But those that are by choice always could have been prevented by simply making a different choice. When someone makes a choice to kill themselves or those around them it affects hundreds of lives most of whom they never realized would have been affected.

  21. The article I chose was part of my homework for human behavior class. It's about a 37 year old skitzephrenic man who escaped from a field trip the hospital took to a local amusement park. This man tried to pitch a ride with a woman who pulled over and asked if he needed help, but refused to give him a ride. He proceeded to strangle this woman trying to convince her, and killed her in the process.

The man did not have complete control over this situation, because he is suffering from skitzephrenia he didn't necessarily understand what was happening. The woman had control, tried to take control and died because of it. She just tried to help the man and by chance died.
Third, please read over the comments on this post and respond to the following question:Which is the greater tragedy--one that happens because of a bad choice, or the one that happens by random chance? Explain your thinking.
I believe one that happens because of a bad choice is more tragic. The person that made the bad choice knows why it happened, and it can be explained. When something happens from random you have an explination and there is nothing you could do to help it. When you make a bad decision you could regret it for the rest of your life. Just like Emily K said above me, one bad choice effects the rest of your life and is regretted and could have been prevented.

In response to Romo's blog, I agree with you, this is a tragedy no human should have to endure, TOFU is the bane of human existence and should not be eaten, except for maybe in some Chinese cuisine, but of course there are several other tragedies worse than this like thee death of a person, but this terrible tofu tale is definitely horrible.

After reading Kaity's comment, i agreed with her about chance. her statment of having to say that " they didnt have a chance" impacted me and i agree with her. it is difficult to not be able to say they had a chance of survival but i think it creates a bigger tragedy to say that they had a chance and they didnt make it. Awesome job kaity with bringing in that point.

  26. In response to Gabe, I agree with him that the man in his story was caught by "choice" because he choose to kill members of his family. It is unfortunate that his sisters died, and i believe that was by chance. Gabe said that tragedy is worse by choice, where as i believe that it is worse by chance because with choice you know that outcome, and chance is at random.

  27. in response to Austin k's tragedy: I think that those are the worst kind of tragedies, the ones where someone makes a choice to kill another. and i agree with him in that it is terrible in both ways because you feel awful for the girl who had no control over the situation and for the man who made the choice because he has to live with that guilt now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. After reading through these posts I thought that Kaity's post about the Conifer students was sad because it seems like a lot of younger people are starting to pass away in greater numbers, it just seems like the death rate of highnschool students is raising from what it used to be.

    ReplyDelete
  29. In response to Austin:

You make a good point that it sort of depends on what role the person plays to determine what type of tragedy is worse. I agree with what you said about how the person who made the bad choice has to deal with the guilt, which would be worse for that person. For the people that made the right decisions, a tragedy influenced by random choice would be worse, because they did not have a say in the outcome of the tragedy.

  30. Jake Lonborg- Your blog is short and to the point. I agree when you say its sad when the person has no control over their death because you just have to wonder why, why it had to end like it did. Your just left with the question why. For the person doing bad things it is harder to feel bad for them but i still think you can feel bad. Maybe they just did a stupid thing they usually don't do. I know I do a lot of dumb things, and you know that too, but your right in the sense of it was theiir fault.

  31. I agree with Devon's opinion about tragedy. She says that the tragedy was out of the control of Elizabeth Smart. Another person's choice forced this tragedy upon Elizabeth, her family, and her friends. I partially agree with her second statement that if her parents had been more responsible maybe it wouldn't have happened. Perhaps her parents should have been watching her closer but it's not fair to put that guilt on them. It's a tragedy that we have to live in a society with sick people in the first place . It's a tragedy that we have to constantly worry about something bad happening to our family and friends. So yes there were choices that led to this, but tragedies like kidnappings happen all the time so it was by chance as well.

  32. I really agree with everyone because Michael jacksons death was very tragic and everyone was was affected by it in some way. I think Patrick Swayzes death was overlooked because of Michael Jackson dying so not many people thought about Patrick and how tragic his death was. I think Patricks death was really tragic and sad because he didnt have a choice at all because of his cancer and they could not help him and he knew he wouldnt live much longer.

  33. I liked Gage's post. He did a good job explaining the article and it was very true when he said that a random chance is more sad than a bad choice. 34. Gabe--
I am responding to Gabe's blog post. I agree with what he said because most people would rather die from old age rather than being shot by somebody. I also think that it would be worse to be killed by a family member rather than a random person because you may have grown up with so you knew them very well and you would not have expected it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In response to what Trent said, I agree with almost everything you said but i disagree that tragedies by chance is the most traumatic. Imagine it like a car crash, if a random car crashes into your friend and he dies. You have an explanation and he has died in honor. Opposed to if your friend drives the car into a wall on purpose and dies. You don't have an explanation, you don't know why he has chosen to do this, and you always have a feeling that you could have prevented it. In the position given by chance you couldn't have changed or prevented it because it was an option taken by surprise with no chance it could have been for-seen. So you would have to live your life knowing they did it on purpose, I could have prevented it, and I think that would be worse than at least knowing and having an explination and knowing they left in honor and you have the good memories of them.

  36. 37. Nick K, I agree with you. Billy Mays death was indeed tragic, but he knew what it was that he was doing. The tsuanami washed away entire communities and caused nearly 10 billion dollars in damage. According to the United Nations this tsunami had the most amount of casualties than any other in history!

I think that these people didn't have any control over this tragedy, it was something that just happened by chance. However I do think that there could have taken more precautions beforehand that could have helped prevent such a high death toll.

I hadn't thought about a tragedy by choice in that way, and you bring up a good point. You said that if someone dies by choice it causes dismay on others and eventually goes in circles because of all the questions that are being asked. In some ways hurting the people around you is worse than hurting your self. It is worse because it would be your fault and the other people that become upset could have been avoided.

I agree with Gage and the other people who said that the death of Patrick Swayze was ended by cancer that he had been fighting for 20 months. Patrick Swayze did not make the choice of having the tragic cancer. He decided to fight the cancer as anyone would.

I found your tragedy very interesting. I really liked how you explained how a bad choice is worse than one by random chance. However, I disagree when you say that a bad choice could change your life forever because people could believe that they are making the right choice even if it's not the best choice. This could end up becoming a bad choice and it isn't always a choice.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mollyb: I agree with you in that death by choice is more sad than death accidentally. It brings more guilt to the people around that individual such as family and friends. It makes them question what they did wrong which could live with them forever. If someone was killed by chance, in a way family and friends might be able to get through it better coming to the fact that it's life and accidents happen where as killing oneself is by choice and not chance.

  44. I also thought the Fort Hood shootings were most suprising. It is so sad that a soldier would kill his fellow soldiers who are all fighting for our country. I don't understand why the Maj. did what he did, it was his choice and no one could stop him I guess. This was a shocking and tragic event.

  45. I agree with Sam because unless he told somebody about his plans then nobody can really do anything to stop him trying. 47. An article I found was about a fatal car accident that happened in Lakewood. A women possibly under the influence was driving and hit another lady driving on a head on collision. This womens death was definatly by chance becasue she was just driving home at night like everyday and a drunk driver hit her and killed her. There was nothing she could do to prevent this from happening. I don't think it is fair for anyone to say what type of death is "worse". It is death, for whatever reason or whoever it is, it is extremely tragic. Maybe someone committed suicide and you say it is selfish, but you have no idea what that persons been through. Its not right but death is death. And i don't think someone can say what's worse, that's just not right.

  48. The death of Micheal Jackson was truly a tradgety. He died at the age of 50, police responded to a 911 call from his house, by the time they arived he had stoped breathing. I think that his death happend by chance(mostly) his doctor give him perscription drugs, and he was also taking another drug at the same time, so this death was slightly by chance, but he also knew that he was taking another drug, so it is also slightly by choice. The worse tragedy is one that is unexpected, its just by chance. This is the worst because there is no way of knowing it is coming it is just ramdom. People lose family and friends everday to chance.

  49. The death of the Rex Hegyi because even though I don’t know this man his death could have been avoided. On August 2009 Rex Hegyi casually took his bicycle out for a ride near Evergreen Parkway ramp to eastbound I-70. During that time 56 year old Lawyer Jeffrey Scott Detlefs along with his 11-year-old twins and 8 year old was leaving a party knowing that he was too drunk to drive home. Detlefs was getting onto I-70 eastbound at the same time as Rex's bicycle ride. Unfortunately these two collided. Detlefs immediately left the scene of the crime not knowing that Rex was still alive and in serious condition. Rex died alone a few minutes after being struck by Detlefs car.

Rex didn’t have to die. He was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time. But this death could have been avoided if Detlef choose to call a taxi and not drive drunk.

I agree that Michleal Jackson's death was a tragedy, but I don’t think we should be pointing fingers at people I mean none of us knew the situation that was going on there. Michael could have easily over dosed.

  50. I chose an article about a tragedy that happened to Steven Curtis Chapman. He is a Christian Rock musician that lost his 5 year old daughter who had just celebrated her birthday just 10 days before this tragic accident happened. She was run over by one of her older brothers did not see her when he was backing out of their driveway. The family just got done celebrating the engagement of their oldest daughter and they were about to celebrate the graduation of one of their boys.
I think that this story was all a chance and not a choice because the little girl ran out in front of the car and her older brother did not see her as he was backing up.
In my opinion I think it is a worse tragedy when it is one of chance and not choice. I think it worse to die from a chance because it was not their fault and they did not want to die rather than one of choice, were they choose to die or make a bad choice.

  51. A family of four was injured at the intersection of Iliff and Federal by a silver SUV that slammed into them while turning onto Iliff. The article does not state if they were using the cross walk or not but the driver should have paid attention. The family was rushed quickley to the hospital once paramedics arrived.

The family did not have control over this tragedy but the driver made a bad choice by either not paying attention or just being careless. If the driver had acted differently, this whole ordeal could have been avoided.

The greater tragedy is the making of bad choices. because right there, is the death of good choices
